Horse Portraits

Capturing the Spirit
of the Horse

Horses were my first love and I spent many hours of my childhood either on a pony or drawing and painting them! I have since been lucky enough to paint some well known faces in the Equine sporting world. I offer drawings in pencil or paintings in oil. These range from head only portraits to full action paintings and can be done in miniature or standard sizes.

A passion for the Equestrian form

I have previously exhibited with the Osbourne Studio Gallery, the Society of Equestrian Artists and at equine events such as the Houghton Hall International Horse Trials. Having grown up with horses I have a keen understanding of equine anatomy and movement.

I can paint the horse on it's own or with the rider, guaranteeing a likeness in both. Each commission begins with either a photo shoot or a discussion around images you already have.

THE PROCESS

HOW IT WORKS

Portraits can be created from photos either provided by you or from a photo shoot with Davina. She works in pencil, charcoal, pastel, oil or even contemporary mixed media to achieve the look that you want or to keep within a certain budget.

1

Initial Chat

Share your ideas, reference photos and preferences. I can use photographs provided by you as long as they are of a high quality.

2

Quote & Timeline

I will confirm the cost and expected timeframe once the size, medium, and practical details of the artwork have been agreed. Please note there is generally a 6 month waiting list but I will always try to accommodate where possible.

3

Creation

You’ll receive updates at key stages during the process. A final preview will be provided for your approval before the artwork is carefully prepared to ship.

4

Framing & Delivery Options

Framing can be arranged on request. All artworks are securely packaged and fully tracked on their journey to you.

Davina has painted three of my hunters. It is only my departure from the hunting field that will prevent me commissioning a forth. She is a hidden gem in the field of equestrian portraiture.

Lord Portsmouth

We absolutely adore our portrait of Tarka. Dee has so cleverly managed to capture his expression and innate enthusiasm for life! It was a birthday present for my husband and he was blown away by it. Thank you so much!

Please note that portrait prices depend on size and content, particularly where background scenery and multiple subjects are included.

Travel expenses and post and packaging may be added to the cost as well.

GETTING THE PERFECT PHOTO

When taking your own photographs outside with the sun behind you. Be careful of direct sunlight casting too much of a shadow. You want to get a good shine on the coat.
For pets, get someone to help you with treats if necessary, so that the animal is looking over your shoulder with ears pricked.
For head portraits of pets, a 3/4 view is best. For full body, try to take the side of the animal with the animal looking towards or past the camera.
Try getting down to the height of the
animal or child so that they aren't
looking up at you.
